Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the difference of caries experience and treatment between low and high socioeconomic status(SES) children. Methods: 1,097 preschool children were sampled conveniently in H-gu, Pusan. The number of low SES group was 332(30.3%). Decayed, filled teeth(dft) were examined by two trained dentists by the criteria of World Health Organization. Percentage of subjects who experienced caries and with active caries were calculated. dft and dt index were also calculated. The difference of dental caries between groups were analyzed by student’s t-test. Results: The dft index was higher in low SES group(4.11) than high SES group(3.66). Percentage of subjects with active caries was higher in low SES group(52.4%) than high SES group(42.3%). The dt index was also higher in low SES group(2.01) than high SES group(1.47). Conclusions: Low SES children showed higher caries level than high SES children. The findings suggest that public oral health efforts for low SES children should be required from a health policy perspective.
