Abstract
This study has focused on the evaluation of toxic element contamination from abandoned metal mines in Korea and the suggestion of the best management methods for the mines. According to the previous reconnaissance survey for environmental contamination in the mining sites, over 310 mines from 638 mines were contaminated with As, CN- and heavy metals including Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn in tailings, soils and mine water around the metal mines. Therefore, the detailed survey for soil and water contamination derived from mining activities should be carried out from next years. As results of detailed survey for 158 mines classified as provisionally serious contaminated with heavy metals, concentrations of toxic elements in mine wastes(tailings), soils and water from 104 mines were contained over the environmental guidelines in Korea. Arsenic and Cd were the most frequently contaminated elements followed by Pb, Cu, Hg, CN-, Cr6+ and Ni. This study also examined the NPL(National Priority List) for remediation of the mining areas with the degree of contamination intensity, quantity and quality of contamination source materials and nearby conditions of the mining area. Finally, the best available management methods for abandoned metal mines in Korea were suggested in the study
