Abstract

In a pavement structure, it is well known that the moisture content of the unbound layers may be changed due to variation in environmental conditions. Moisture content is one of the most environmentally driven variables that can significantly affect the resilient modulus of subgrade soils. For purposes of a new pavement design or evaluation of an existing one, it is necessary to predict the change in modulus corresponding to an expected or measured change in moisture content. Considering the sophisticated procedure of cyclic resilient modulus test, it is more convenient and reasonable to construct a separate modulus-soil moisture model. One of the best ways of modeling of modulus-soil moisture is adopting the ratio of modulus based on the modulus of initial condition which is usually at optimum moisture condition and maximum dry density. In this paper, applicability of three types of models which relate to the modulus ratio and moisture content was assessed using test results of the accompanied paper. Also, a model which relates to the modulus ratio and soil suction is newly proposed. The modulus-soil suction model has an advantage when the suction of field unbound layers is expected or measured based on the concept of unsaturated soil as shown in 2002 AASHTO Design Guide.
