Abstract

Water potential in soil is one of the important physical factors. In relation to water content, soil moisture characterization (SMC) curve can be obtained using various measuring techniques. Dew point potentiameter, which measures the water potential, was used to estimate SMC curves of root media. Before blending and preparing root media, SMC curve of each peatmoss, vermiculite, and perlite was obtained. Peatmoss and vermiculite showed strong relationship between water content and water potential (peatmoss, r²=0.983; vermiculite, r²=0.883). However, it was not able to estimate SMC curve for perlite. For 20 different root media mixed with peatmoss, perlite, and vermiculite by volume, SMC curves of root media were obtained from two parameters, water content and water potential. Therefore, it can provide easier and faster method to define moisture characteristics of root media in laboratory.
