연구배경: 담배 가격 인상은 청소년층에서 효과적인 금연 정책 중 하나로 인정되고 있다. 본 연구는 2004년 말에 시행된 담배 가격 인상이 청소년 흡연 양상에 미친 영향을 알아보고자 시행하였다. 방법: 2005년 5월 서울의 남자 인문 고등학생 12명을 대상으로 사전 조사를 시행하였다. 2005년 6월 서울 강남에 소재한 일개 남자 인문 고등학교와 충남에 소재한 남녀 실업/인문 고등학교를 각 1개씩 선정하여 자기기입식 설문조사를 통해 2004년 말 담배가격 인상 이후 흡연 양상의 변화를 조사하였다. 통계 처리는 SPSS 12.0 for Windows를 사용하였다. 결과: 응답률은 91.4%였다. 조사대상자는 총 1,424명으로 만 15세에서 20세까지였고, 남자는 883명, 여자는 541명이었다. 가격 인상 이후 흡연율은 전체 28.6% 감소하였고, 남자는 27.9%, 여자는 33.0% 감소하였다. 용돈을 적게 받는 경우, 금연 준비 단계 중 준비기일 때 유의하게 담배를 더 많이 끊었다. 담배를 끊거나 줄인 비율은 전체 39.0%였고, 남자는 34.3%, 여자는 33.0%에서 흡연량이 감소하였다. 남자에 비해 여자가, 금연 준비 단계 중 준비기일 때 고려 전기에 비해 유의하게 담배를 더 많이 끊거나 줄였다. 가격 인상을 계기로 담배를 줄이거나 끊은 비율은 28.9%였고, 흡연 시작 시기가 늦을수록, 인상 이전 흡연량이 많을수록 가격 인상에 영향을 받았다. 결론: 2004년 말 담배 가격 인상 이후 고등학교 흡연자의 39.0%가 담배를 줄이거나 끊었고, 28.6%가 금연하였다. 가격 인상으로 흡연율이 8.3% 감소하였다.
