Abstract

Objectives: The purpose of this research was to prepare basic data about girl students' school loss due to oral diseases and to investigate the relevant factors. Methods: Questionnaire surveys were conducted for 1,402 girl students who are attending schools in Gwangju. School loss was investigated based on the experiences of absences and leaving school early, which had happened from oral diseases. The independent variables were oral health behaviors and socio-economic factors such as sex, age of their parents, educational level of their parents, family income. Factors related with school loss was analyzed by the multiple logistic regression method. Results: The 3.1% of students were absent on account of oral disease at high or middle school. Also, the annual average days of absence and early leaving school for middle school students were 0.098, while the average days for high school students were 0.505. Students' school loss were related to school record. Also, the educational level of student and family income appeared to be relevant to school loss. The students who had negative self-efficacy in disease prevention are more likely to experience absences and early leaving school that those who had positive self-efficacy. Those who felt burdensome in sparing time for dental care were more likely to be experience impediment in their school studies. Conclusion: The oral health promotion should be developed to decrease school loss for students.
