Relationship between dental fear and beliefs toward dental personnels among middle school children

Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between dental fear and beliefs toward dentist and dental hygienist among some children aged between 12 to 14 years old. Methods: Dental fear survey and dental beliefs survey for dentist and dental hygienist were used for questionnaire 451 sheets were collected and analyzed with t-test, one-way ANOVA and stepwise multiple regression using SPSS 12.0. Results: Children who experienced more severe and more frequent pain during past dental treatment had high dental anxiety scale. The high level of self-perceived oral health and less experience of breaking the dental visit appointment, the lower dental anxiety scale they had. The beliefs toward dentist and dental hygienist, experience of breaking dental visit appointment, past history of severity and frequency of pain during treatment and self-perceived oral health were significant predictor of the dental fear. Conclusions: It is necessary to establish special efforts about dental fear and anxiety control for all patients. Educational interventions aimed at reducing the dental fear and anxiety in a dental office should be emphasized among dental personnels.
