The Study on Changes of Shoulder, Elbow and Forearm ROM with increasing Age in Youth Baseball Players

Abstract

This study was designed to assess the changes in range of motion with increasing age in youth baseball players. For this study, 79 athletes with no problem physically were included. We divided them into 3 groups (G1; Middle school, 13.4±0.9yrs, G2; High school 16.9±0.9yrs, G3; University, 20.0-1.1yrs). We tested both dominant and non-dominant upper limbs for range of motion including internal and external rotation of shoulder joint, flexion and extension of elbow joint, pronation and supination of forearm. We analyzed the data using one-way ANOVA to know difference of ROM among groups using SPSS 13.0 for windows. The results demonstrated that internal rotation of shoulder joint was significant lower in G3 than G2 (p=.006), but these was decrease with increasing ages in range of ER (p=.384). The elbow ROM was lower in G3 than the G1 (p=.039). And, in ROM of dominant forearm pronation was significantly different in all groups. Therefore, We concluded the ROM was higher in dominant upper limb than the non-dominant one and the ROM of joints decreased with increasing age in baseball players.
