Abstract

In this paper, we review recent research trends in gesture-based user interfaces to support natural user interactions with media contents. With the developments of information and communication technology, users are able to enjoy varous media contents through various devices anytime and anywhere. From the perspective of user interactions, however, we still suffer from unnatural user interfaces and learning phase of new user interfaces on the various types of media contents and devices. Thus, to support more natural and comfortable user interfaces, there have been many research activities on the development of gesture-based user interfaces. The gesture-based user interface is relatively intuitive and simple in comparison with other user interfaces, such as speech, haptics and eye-gaze, so that it can support more natural user interactions. In particular, the gesturebased user interface is more effective on mobile devices due to its intuitiveness and simplicity. Therefore, we believe personalized gesture-based user interface is required to support user-centered multi-modal interactions in ubiquitous computing environment.

본 논문에서는 미디어 콘텐츠와의 자연스러운 사용자 상호작용을 지원하기 위한 제스처(Gesture)기반 사용자 인터페이스에 대한 관련 연구 동향을 살펴본다. 최근 정보 통신 기술의 발전과 함께 사용자들은 언제 어디서나 다양한 미디어 콘텐츠들을 다양한 장치들을 통해서 즐길 수 있게 되었다. 하지만 상호작용 측면에서 보면, 사용자는 여전히 부자연스러운 사용자 인터페이스를 사용해야만 할 뿐만 아니라 새로운 인터페이스를 매번 학습을 해야하는 불편함을 감수해야 한다. 따라서 다양한 장치들과 미디어 콘텐츠와의 보다 자연스럽고 편안한 사용자 상호작용을 지원하기 위해서 사용자의 움직임을 이용한 제스처기반 사용자 인터페이스에 대한 연구가 국내 외적으로 활발히 진행되고 있다. 제스처기반 사용자 인터페이스는 다른 사용자 인터페이스(음성, 촉감, 시점 등)에 비해서 비교적 직관적이고 간단하기 때문에 사용자들에게 보다 자연스러운 사용자 상호작용을 제공할 수 있다. 뿐만 아니라 콘텐츠와의 상호작용에 제약조건이 많은 모바일 장치의 경우에도, 직관적이고 간단한 제스처기반 사용자 인터페이스는 효과적이다. 따라서 유비쿼터스 컴퓨팅 환경과 같이 사용자 중심의 멀티-모달(Multi-modal) 상호작용을 지원하기 위해서는 사용자의 움직임뿐만 아니라 사용자의 맥락도 함께 고려된 개인화된 제스처기반 사용자 인터페이스가 요구된다.
