Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of adolescents' body image on self-esteem and the differences in effect according to gender and developmental stage. A survey was conducted to 392 students from middle and high schools selected in Gwangju. The instruments for this study were MBSRQ (Cash, 1990) and Self- Esteem Scale (Rogenberg, 1965). Correlations and ANOV A were conducted to analyze collected data. The major finding s of this study were as follows : First, correlations between body image and self-esteem were highly significant except one sub-variable of body image, appearance orientation. Second, the effects of appearance evaluation and body area satisfaction on self-esteem reached significance. Third, for male adolescents, the effect of appearance evaluation on self- esteem was much higher than that of body part satisfaction. For female adolescents, the effect of body part satisfactyion on self-esteem was higher than that of appearance evaluation. Fourth, the effects of sub-variables of body image on self- esteem showed similar pattern for both middle and high school students.

본 연구는 청소년의 신체이미지가 자존감에 미치는 영향을 알아보고 그 영향력의 양상이 성별과 학교급별에 따라 차이를 보이는지를 알아보기 위하여 광주광역시에 거주하는 중학생과 고등학생 392명을 대상으로 설문을 조사한 결과를 분석하였다. 신체이미지를 측정하기 위하여 MBSRQ (Cash, 1990)이 사용되었고 자존감은 자존감척도 (Rogenberg, 1965)를 사용하여 측정되었다. 청소년의 신체이미지와 자존감의 상관을 알아보기 위하여 Pearson의 상관계수를 산출하였고, 신체 이미지가 자존감에 미치는 영향력을 알아보기 위하여 중다회귀분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 청소년의 신체이미지와 자존감은 외모평가와 신체만족도가 자존감에 유의한 상관을 보였다. 둘째, 청소년의 신체이미지 중 외모평가와 신체만족도는 자존감에 유의하게 영향을 미쳤다. 셋째, 남자 청소년의 경우, 외모평가가 자존감에 영향력이 가장 큰 변수로 작용하였고 그 다음이 신체만족도인 것에 반하여 여자 청소년은 신체만족도의 영향력이 외모평가보다 컸다. 넷째, 중학생과 고등학생의 외모평가와 신체만족도가 자존감에 미치는 영향력은 큰 차이를 보이지 않았다.
