Abstract
This study aimed at the application of pilot geographic information system (GIS) for the effective environmental management in a small river basin. A pilot GIS was established based on the environmental and spatial data from Yugkye river flowing into Andong Lake. The established pilot GIS enabled visualization and extraction of inquired data, the distribution of nonpoint-source pollution loads, for the river basin. The maximum pollution load spot was estimated by using the pen database, considering livestock was the major pollution source in Yugkye river basin. Also the spatial analysis of pollutant loads could be conducted with this system. This study suggested that the system successfully worked as a powerful tool for environmental management to perform regional assessments, identifying hot spots at a watershed scale, defining nonpoint source pollution loads condition within watershed boundaries, and accessing summarized data at a site-specific scale.
