Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between tooth loss and risk factors for cardiovascular diseases(CVD) in the elderly in Korea. Methods: The subjects were 1,494 male and 2,117 female over age 60 who participated in health screening program presided by National Health Insurance Corporation in Sungju-gun Gyeongsangbuk-do. They were examined the number of missing teeth in mouth and general health status including CVD risk factors such as age, body mass index(BMI), systolic blood pressure(SBP), fasting plasma glucose(FPG), and total cholesterol(CHOL) after adjusting for smoking, aspartate transaminase, and hemoglobin. Multiple regression models were built with SPSS for Window 14.0. Results: SBP was significantly associated with tooth loss in each age and sex group. In men, FPG had an significant association with tooth loss in each age group. CHOL was added as a significant factor in the model for the sixties and so were CHOL and BMI in the model for the seventies. In women, FPG and CHOL were significant factors related to tooth loss in the sixties and CHOL was significant as well in the seventies. Conclusions: Cardiovascular risk factors were positively related to the number of missing teeth in the rural elderly in Korea.
