Abstract

The present study investigates the relationship between the typhoon activity around the Korean Peninsula and the Tibetan Plateau snow-cover in previous winter and spring using 23-year (1976-1998) satellite snow cover data and the typhoon best track data. A negative corelation is found between the number of typhoons that affect the Korean Peninsula Plateau snow cover is below normal in previous winter and spring, more typhoons afect the Korean Peninsula. However, the typhoon intensity is on average much weaker during the negative snow cover anomaly years. The weaker intensity is observed because most typhoons tend to pas through China before moving to the Korean Peninsula. It is sugested that this kind of track pattern could be formed in association with the southeastern Asian sumer monsoon trough around the South China Sea and Philippines.
