Abstract
Carbonization processes for woody biomass is concerned to produce renewable energy source and to reduce greenhouse gas effectively. Even though the importance of carbonization is emphasized, it is difficult to operate carbonization process economically. Also the evaluation of carbonization process has not been carried out by considering the data-base for characteristics of biomass. Hence, it is necessary to study carbonization process of biomass to collect the data-base of the characteristics of carbonization residue. In this study, the thermal characteristics of woody biomass such as proximate analysis, and heating value are estimated. In order to provide the renewable energy source, carbonization test for woody biomass is carried by changing carbonization temperature and time. As increased carbonization temperature, fuel ratio (fixed carbon/volatile combustible), carbon content, and heating value of carbonization residue are increased but yield of the residue is decreased. As increased carbonization time, yield of the residue is decreased and heating value of the residue is high at 15 min. From the results of estimation of the total heating value of carbonization residue which can be described by heating value and yield, the optimum temperature and time in carbonization test for woody biomass can be decided by 350oC and 15 min, respectively.
