Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of self-disclosure and rational emotive training on nursing student's communication ability, stress, coping behavior, and self-efficacy. Methods: A quasi-experimental research of a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. The subjects were 107 nursing students attending W college in I city (experimental group = 56, control group = 51). Data was collected from March, 2008 to October, 2008. The experimental group received self-disclosure and rational emotive training once a week for 60 minutes for 3 weeks. Results: The scores of communication ability, active stress coping style, and self-efficacy were significantly increased after self-disclosure and rational emotive training in the experimental group. Conclusion: Selfdisclosure and rational emotive training showed positive effects on improving communication ability, active stress coping behaviors, and self-efficacy. Therefore, we recommend this training be utilized as an effective self-expression method for interpersonal relationships among nursing students.
