The Validity and Reliability of Korean Version of Lubben Social Network Scale

Abstract

Background: Over the past decade, considerable evidence has been accumulated showing that social networks influence health. However few valid and reliable instruments exist for assessing social networks among elderly population. Therefore, we translated the Lubben social network scales (LSNS) and tested the validity and reliability of Korean version. Methods: Ten items, self-administered questionnaires were translated by multidisciplinary committee members. Also they were reverse translated by bilingual and modified from pretest procedure. Reliability was tested by 4 weeks test-retest reliability and internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha). Validity was tested by factor analysis and construct validity comparison with the Korean version of Duke-UNC and Korean Health Related Quality of Life Scale (KQOLS) were tested for validity testing. Results: Cronbach's alpha was 0.75. Four weeks test-retest Pearson coefficient was 0.78 (P < 0.0001). Correlation coefficient with the Korean version of Duke-UNC was 0.58 (P < 0.0001). Correlation coefficient with social function domain of KQOLS was 0.40 (P < 0.0001). Principal components analysis identified 3 factors. Three contents areas are family and friends networks, interdependent social support and living arrangements. Conclusion: Korean version of LSNS is both valid and reliable instrument, but fine refinements will be needed to adapt for use in practical settings.

연구배경: 사회적 지지는 노인의 신체적 건강과 밀접한 연관이 있다. Lubben Social Network Scale (이하 LSNS)은 노인의 사회적 지지 수준을 평가하는 도구로 사용되고 있지만 한국인의 언어 표현과 문화를 반영할 수 있는 한국어판은 개발되어 있지 않은 실정이다. 방법: 전문가의 번역, 역 번역을 거쳐서 만들어진 최종 번역본을 사전조사 과정을 통해 완성하였다. 총 10문항의 한국어판 LSNS 설문지를 사용하여 2005년 3월부터 3개월 간 일개 대학병원 가정의학과 외래를 방문한 환자와 서울시 성동구 일대의 노인정과 성당, 교회를 다니는 65세 이상의 노인 261명을 대상으로 신뢰도, 타당도를 분석하였다. 외래를 방문한 20명에게 4주간 검사-재검사법을 실시하였다. 타당도는 한국어판 Duke-UNC 사회적 지지도 설문지와 한국형 삶의 질 측정도구(Korean health related Quality of Life Scale, KQOLS)중 역할, 사회적 기능항목과 수렴 타당도를 검증하고 요인분석을 시행하였다. 결과: 설문지의 내적 일치도는 0.75 이며 검사-재검사법의 상관계수는 0.78이다. 한국어판 DUKE-UNC 사회적 지지도 설문지와 상관계수는 0.58이며 KQOLS의 사회적 기능 영역과 상관계수가 0.40이다. 요인분석 결과 3개의 영역으로 나누어 졌으며 각 영역별 내적 일치도도 높다. 결론: 개발된 한국어판 LSNS 설문지는 65세 이상 노인의 사회적 지지 수준의 평가에 있어서 신뢰도와 타당도가 검증된 측정 도구이다.
