The occurrence patterns of gas hydrate in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea

동해 울릉분지의 가스하이드레이트 부존 형태

Abstract

A total of 6,690 L-kms of two-dimensional and 400 $km^{2}$ of three-dimensional multi-channel seismic reflection data were collected in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea in 2005 and 2006. On the basis of the echo-sounding images of precision deepsea recorder and the multi-channel seismic interpretation, seismic indicators of gas hydrate and associated gas such as bottom simulating reflector (BSR), acoustic blanking, column structure, gas seepage, enhanced reflection were identified. Gas hydrate was detected in localized column structure and sandy layer as nodules, veins, layers, and as disseminated forms from the previous expedition in 2007. Fractures, faults, sandy layer could be the migration pathways transporting fluid and gas to stability zone. Upward diffuse fluid flow could also transport fluid and gas to stability zone. The occurrence types of gas hydrate based on the patterns of gas and fluid migration and the gas hydrate accumulation in the Ulleung Basin include: (1) nodules, veins, layers in muddy sediments and disseminated forms in sandy layer within localized column structure, (2) disseminated forms in sandy layer due to fluid and gas transport through faults, and (3) disseminated forms in sandy layer just above BSR due to fluid and gas transport by upward diffuse fluid flow and through sandy layer.

동해 울릉분지에서 가스하이드레이트 부존을 확인하기 위하여, 2005년 6,690 L-km의 2차원 다채널 탄성파 탐사자료와 2006년 400 $km^{2}$의 3차원 다채널 탄성파 탐사자료를 취득하였다. 탄성파 탐사자료 및 단일빔 정밀음향측심자료 해석에 의해 가스 또는 가스하이드레이트 부존을 나타내는 지구물리학적 지시자인 해저모방반사면, 칼럼구조, 가스분출, 음향공백대, 증폭반사면을 확인하였다. 2007년 심부시추로 칼럼구조와 사질층에서 단괴, 맥, 층 및 공극을 채우는 형태의 가스하이드레이트 부존을 확인하였다. 가스하이드레이트 형성에 중요한 역할을 하는 가스 및 유체는 울릉분지 남부 및 북동부 대륙사면과 북부 분지평원에 잘 발달된 단층을 따라, 서부 대륙사면 저부지역에서 보이는 사질층을 따라, 그리고 오랜 시간동안 위쪽으로 니질층등 퇴적물의 공극을 통해 안정영역으로 이동하는 것으로 해석된다. 가스 및 유체의 이동 형태, 가스하이드레이트 부존 지역, 퇴적물내에서의 산출 형태에 기초하여 가스하이드레이트는 (1) 칼럼구조 내부 니질층에서 단괴, 맥, 층의 형태 그리고 사질층에서 공극을 채우는 형태, (2) 단층을 따라 이동한 가스 및 유체에 의해 안정영역 내에 존재하는 사질층에 공극을 채우는 형태, (3) 사질층을 따라 이동하거나 오랜 시간동안 퇴적물의 공극을 따라 위쪽으로 이동한 가스 및 유체에 의해 해저모방반사면 직상부 사질층에 공극을 채우는 형태로 부존한다.
