Abstract

Objectives: This study examined the correlation between the quartile present teeth and the socioeconomic status and oral health behavior among elderly Koreans. Methods: Data was collected as part of the National Oral Health Survey(NOHS) data in 2006. A two-stage, proportional random sample consisting of 1,193 persons aged 65+ years was carried out. The number of teeth present were categorized as the quartile teeth: from the lowest quartile($Q_1$) to the highest quartile($Q_4$). A Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were used to determine the relationship between the $Q_1$ and $Q_4$ number of teeth and the socioeconomic status and oral health behavior. Results: There were significant differences between in edentulous($Q_1$) subjects aged 75+ years and those with 19 to 28 teeth($Q_4$). In addition, there were significant differences in the quartile of subjects aged 65-74 between those with 0-8($Q_1$) and 25-28($Q_4$). $Q_1$ were significantly associated with the education level, communication ability, experience of a disqualified dentist and frequency of dental visits. When subjects whose last visit to a dentist was less than 6 month prior were used as the reference group, the odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for those aged 65-74 and 75+, who had not visited a dentist for more than 5 years, was 2.1(1.1-3.8) and 5.7(2.2-15.1) respectively. Conclusion: $Q_4$ was associated with a higher education level, communication ability, lack of experience with a disqualified dentist and frequency of dental visits than those with $Q_1$ teeth. Overall, the quartile of teeth present is associated with the socioeconomic status and oral health behavior of elderly Koreans.
