Characterization and Modeling Light Scattering in Diffuser Sheets

Abstract

The normal luminance and view angle of a liquid crystal display (LCD) depend on the light scattering characteristics of the diffuser sheet and the diffuser plate in the LCD backlight unit. The angular scattering characteristics of the diffuser sheet and the diffuser plate employed in a direct-illumination LCD backlight are measured in terms of the incidence angle. Modified Gaussian scattering functions were developed to explain the scattering characteristics of the diffusers, which strongly depend on the angle of incidence.
