Clinical Aspect of Low Vision Patients due to Macular Degeneration

황반변성에 의한 저시력 환자의 임상양상

Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the clinical features of low vision patients due to macular degeneration and to evaluate the efficacy of low vision aids in patients with the disease. Methods: Out of 283 patients who visited the vision clinic of Seoul National University Hospitalfrom March 2004 to January 2007, the number of patients with macular degeneration was 38. Their medical records were reviewed retrospectively. Results: The study group consisted of 23 male and 15 female patients. The average age was 69.7$\pm$11.2 years and 34 patients (89.5%) were over 50 years of age. From the visits to the low vision clinic, results showed thenear vision improved in 63%, distant vision in 5.3%, and both in 7.9% of the patients. With the help of low vision aids, near visual acuity of 0.4 or better was achieved in 80% of the patients. Low vision aids were prescribed for near vision in 30 patients and for distant vision in 2 patients. Conclusions: Near vision can improve in most macular degeneration patients with the use of proper low vision aids. Consistent education and training could promote successful use of the devices.

목적: 황반변성으로 인한 저시력 환자의 임상 양상 및 저시력 기구의 효과를 알아보고자 하였다. 대상과 방법: 2004년 3월부터 2007년 1월까지 서울대학교병원 안과 저시력 클리닉을 방문한 환자 283명 중 황반변성 환자 38명의 의무기록을 후향적으로 분석하였다. 결과: 대상 환자는 38명으로 남자 23명, 여자 15명이었으며, 평균 나이는 69.7$\pm$11.2세로, 51세 이상이 34명(89.5%)이었다. 방문 목적은 63%에서 근거리 시력, 7.9%에서 근거리 및 원거리 시력, 5.3%에서 원거리 시력 개선이었다. 저시력 보조기구를 사용하여 80%에서 0.4 이상의 근거리 시력 개선 효과를 얻을 수 있었다. 30명(79.0%)에서 근거리 보조기구를, 2명(5.3%)에서 원거리 보조기구를 처방하였다. 결론: 황반변성으로 인한 저시력 환자 대부분에서 적절한 저시력 보조기구의 사용으로 근거리 시력의 개선이 가능하였다.
