Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the association between meals intake and experience of dental caries among one middle school children. Methods: First grade of one middle school in Daegu city was conveniently selected for the cross-sectionally study. Oral exam, and snack and beverage intake pattern from food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) were performed among 322 students who consented this survey. Wilcoxon's rank sum test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and multivariate logistic regression analysis were applied to assess an association between snack and beverage intake and dental caries. Results: The DMFT index significantly higher low economic class than middle economic class(p=0.004). A linear increasing pattern of DMFT index was observed as soft drink and smack intake increased(soft drink, p=0.026; snack, p=0.001). From the logistic regression the experience of dental caries was significantly associated with mother's occupation(OR=0.336; 95% CI=0.282, 0.948), economic status(OR=0.517; 95% CI=0.118, 0.959), yogurt intake(OR=0.721; 95% CI=0.532, 0.976), soft drink intake(OR=1.426; 95% CI=1.050, 1.936) and snack intake(OR=1.400; 95% CI=1.043, 1.878). Conclusion: This study suggested the experience of dental caries was associated with snack and beverage intake. Thus the snack and beverage intake should be considered as a related factor to the prevention of dental caries among early adolescence.
