Light Manipulation in a Transparent Medium with Laser-Patterned Three-Dimensional and Surface Scatterers

Abstract

We propose a light manipulation method in the light guide panel (LGP) of a liquid crystal display (LCD) using three-dimensional inner scatterers and surface scatterers without any thin optical sheets, and we demonstrate the feasibility of using the proposed method to improve the LGP performance, such as uniformity and average brightness in illumination. The use of the three-dimensional scatterers enhances the uniformity on the LGP, and engraved surface scatterers improve the average brightness, where the scatterers within and on the LGP are formed by using a 2nd-harmonic pulsed Nd:YAG laser engraving system and $CO_2$ laser system. We suggest a simplified simulation model for the performance expectation of the designed LGP. Compared with experimentally measured brightness, a high efficiency was demonstrated for the proposed method. The utilization of laser-induced scatterers may be promising for the control of light scattering in the transparent medium of a LGP.
