Abstract
Geological storage capacity of carbon dioxide ($CO_{2}$) in sandstones of the Sindong Group of the Cretaceous Gyeonsang Basin was first evaluated by quantification and characterization of spatial and stratigraphical distributions of storage rocks (sandstones) within the basin based on detailed field description and porosity measurement of sandstone samples in the Gunwi, Goryeong, and Jinju areas. Field-based survey revealed up-sequence decrease in average proportion of total sandstone from 59% to 36%. Spatial variance of channel sandstone bodies in the Sindong Group was geostatistically calculated and graphically demonstrated by sedimentary columnar sections. Areal ratio of channel sandstone bodies tends to decrease upward from $\sim$64% to $\sim$13% together with little or no remarkable channel sandstone body in the Jinju Formation distributed in the Goryeong and Jinju areas. Total and channel sandstone volumes in the Sindong Group at 800$\sim$2,000 m deep subsurface, which is the best location for $CO_{2}$ geological storage, are estimated to be 1,960 and 1,081 $km^{3}$, respectively. Based on information of porosity and geographic extents of the sandstones, potential storage volume of $CO_{2}$ in total and channel sandstones of the Sindong Group is estimated to be 1,011 and 535 Mton on average, respectively.
