Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study were to assess various candidate predictors for each response level (very poor, poor, fair, and good/very good) of global self-ratings of oral health (GSROH) among Korean young adults. Methods: Data from a national representative sample of 1,516 Korean young adults aged 18~39 years was analyzed. The mean age was 29.8 years and 51.9% were women. After bivariate analysis, a generalized multinomial logit model with individual slope parameters was performed. Results: Only 26.6% rated their oral health good or very good, while 40.8% assessed their oral health as poor or very poor. Significant determinants for GSROH for young adults were number of decayed, filled, and missing teeth, perceived dental treatment needs, difficulty chewing, and concern about oral health. The indicators demarcating response at a good/very good level compared to poorer levels were not having three or more decayed teeth, six or more filled teeth, or perceived treatment need, or not concerning about oral health. The indicator characterizing the response of very bad level was the presence of three or more missing teeth. Conclusion: Public health programs aimed at satisfying dental treatment needs for decayed teeth or missing teeth in young adults may alleviate the oral health concerns and improve the overall oral health of the young adults.
