Self-esteem, Interpersonal Relationship and Depression in Nursing Students

Abstract

The purpose of study was to examine the correlation among self-esteem, interpersonal relationship and depression. Descriptive correlative study was used for the design of this study, and the subjects were 431 persons who are students in nursing college. Data was collected from September, 2009 to October, 2009. Data analysis was investigated by using frequency, descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlation coefficients. The results of study were as follows. There was a significant positive correlation between self-esteem and interpersonal relationship while there was a negative correlation between self-esteem and depression. Also, there was a significant negative correlation between interpersonal relationship and depression. Especially, it was found that following students are vulnerable to depression: students who are struggling with a financial problem, who have an introvert character, who live by themselves or live with relatives rather than their parents, who are either rebellious or submissive to their parents, who did not concern their aptitude when they applied to college, who are not satisfied with college life or who are extremely unsatisfied, as well as who drink more than 3 times per week or smoke cigarette. Therefore, in order resolve depression dilemma of nursing students, it is important to intensely consider counseling and emotion supporting program through more systematical prevention and mediation focusing on groups with high risk.

연구의 목적은 간호대학생의 자존감, 대인관계 및 우울의 정도를 파악하고, 영향을 미치는 요인을 규명하며 이들 간의 관계를 살펴봄으로써 간호대학생의 성인초기에 건강하고 능력 있는 생활을 이루기 위한 기초자료를 제공하고자 수행되었다. 본 연구의 참여자는 간호대학생 431명을 대상으로 설문지법을 통하여 조사연구를 실시하였다. 연구 도구는 자존감, 대인관계 측정 도구와 우울 척도를 사용하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 자존감과 대인관계 간에는 통계학적으로 유의한 정적 상관관계를 보였다. 반면에 대상자의 대인관계와 우울과의 관계는 통계학적으로 유의한 중정도의 부적 상관관계를 보였다. 또한 자존감과 우울은 통계학적으로 유의한 부적 상관관계를 나타냈다. 특히, 본 연구에서 경제적으로 어려움이 있거나, 내향적인 성격, 부모와 떨어져서 친척 집이나 혼자서 거주하는 학생, 부모에게 반항적이거나 복종적인 관계, 대학 지원 시 적성을 고려하지 않은 학생, 대학생활에 만족하지 못하거나 매우 불만족한 학생, 술을 1주일에 3회 이상 마시거나 담배를 피우는 학생이 우울에 취약하다는 사실이 발견되었다. 따라서 간호대학생의 우울 문제를 돕기 위하여 학교와 가정의 긴밀한 연계를 통하여 고 위험 군을 중심으로 보다 체계적인 예방과 중재로 상담 및 정서 지지 프로그램 등이 면밀히 고려되어져야 할 것으로 사료된다.
