Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative research was to explore how the ideology of motherhood contributed to the mother's life. In particular, this study focused on the process how married women decided whether to work or stay home with their young children. For this reason, nineteen full-time mothers and nineteen working mothers with preschoolers were interviewed in depth. As a result, the decision of these mothers represented a complex interplay of factors ranging from beliefs about motherhood to individual contextual factors. The beliefs ranged from conforming to intensive motherhood ideology to rejecting this model and adopting an alternative motherhood ideology. For two groups of mothers, conformists and nonconformists, motherhood ideology was the primary factor that determined whether or not to participate in the labor force. But, the pragmatists, the largest group of mothers, did a cost-benefit analysis in which they consider their beliefs about motherhood, economic need, child care availability, and any other personal reasons in their labor force participation decisions. And also, three types of mothers had different difficulties to carry out the role as a mother practically. These results suggest that to differentiate mothers from one another is not their employment status but their beliefs about appropriate roles for mothers.
