The Effects of Alcoholic Family's Family Resilience on Family Adaptation

알코올 중독자 가족의 가족탄력성이 가족적응에 미치는 영향

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to discover the effect of the alcoholic family's family resilience on family adaptation. A survey was carried out on 100 wives of alcoholics. To measure family resilience, this paper used a measurement tool based on the theory of Walsh(1998). Family adaptation was measured using a 10-item scale on family adaptation from among FACES III(Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale III), a scale for evaluating family cohesion and adaptation developed by Olson(1991). To discover the effect family resilience(family belief systems, organizational patterns, communication processes) has on alcoholic family's family adaptation, a multiple regression analysis was carried out. The results of the analysis are as follows: family belief systems, organizational patterns, and communication processes were shown as sub-dimensions of family resilience that affected alcoholic family's family adaptation. Successful family adaptation of an alcoholic family requires enhancement of family resilience - namely, the positive outlook of alcoholic family's on adversity, good use of family's strengths, a sense of fellowship and closeness due to stable role division in family, flexible and effective use of internal and external resources, frank and positive communication among family.
