Mediating Effect of Emotion Regulation in the Relationship between Self-Esteem and Mental Health of Nursing Student

Abstract

This study was done to examine the association among self-esteem and emotion regulation, and explored the mediation effects of emotion regulation in the between self-esteem and mental health of nursing students. A cross sectional study design was done. Nursing students study subjects 3 and 4 year 182 undergraduates students. Base measurement tools measure the Rosenberg's self-esteem, mental health test, NMR (negative mood regulation), and a structured questionnaire was used. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis using the SPSS Win 17.0 Program. Participants was slightly higher degree of self-esteem, mental health, the level was moderate. A slightly higher degree of emotion regulation were examined. Self-esteem were positively correlated with emotion regulation (r=.726, p<.001), and was negatively correlated with emotion regulation (r=-.639, p<.001) and mental health problems (r=-.572, p<.001). Emotion regulation was acted as a mediator in the between self-esteem and mental health problems. Therefore, prevention of mental health problems of nursing students and to promote mental health with an emphasis on the emotion regulation to apply to the development of interventions will be effective.

본 연구는 간호대학생의 자존감과 정서조절, 정신건강 정도를 확인하고 자존감과 정신건강과의 관계에서 정서조절의 매개효과를 파악하고자 한다. 연구대상자는 간호대학생 3, 4학년 182명이었다. 연구 도구는 자존감 척도(Rosenberg'sscale), 간이정신진단 검사(SCL-90-R), NMR (negative mood regulation) 등 구조화된 설문지를 이용하였다. 설문지를 통해 수집된 자료는 SPSS Win 17.0 Program을 이용하여 분석하였다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 대상자들의 자존감정도는 약간 높은 수준이었고, 정신건강 수준은 중간 정도였다. 정서조절 정도는 약간 높은 것으로 나타났다. 자존감, 정신건강, 정서조절은 유의한 상관관계가 있는 것으로 조사되었는데 자존감과 정신건강은 부적 상관관계(r=-.639, p<.001), 자존감과 정서조절은 정적 상관관계(r=.726, p<.001), 그리고 정신건강과 정서조절은 부적 상관관계(r=-.572, p<.001)를 나타내었다. 대상자들이 인지한 자존감과 정신건강과의 관계에서 정서조절은 매개효과($\beta$= -.474, p<.001)가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 간호대학생들의 정신건강문제를 예방하고 정신건강을 증진시키기 위해서는 정서조절에 중점을 둔 중재를 개발하여 적용하는 것이 효과적일 것이다.
