A Analysis on Effect of Rhythm Action Game for Improvement of Geriatric Depression and Self-esteem of Elderly Patients

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the positive effect of smart-device-based rhythm action game on geriatric depression and self-esteem of 16 elderly patients in nursing hospitals and discuss characteristics of the game related to the treatment of the depression and self-esteem. The study has conducted experimental comparisons of pretest and posttest for geriatric depression, self-esteem, and mental state between a control group(8 people) and an experimental group(8 people) that has played rhythm action game, and also recorded experimental group's game playing activities of 10 sessions using participant observation, and measured satisfaction and flow of an experimental group. As a result, we identify that the rhythm action game participates effectively in geriatric depression, self-esteem, and hand reaction, as an tool which provides interactive environment and auditory, visual and tactile stimulation.

본 연구의 목적은 노인 환자를 대상으로 음악 게임을 활용한 치료에서 음악 게임이 어떻게 노인 환자의 우울감, 자존감의 상승에 관여했는지 알아보는 데 있다. 이를 위해 경기도 노인 전문 용양병원 양원에 입원중인 16명의 노인을 대상으로 각각 8명씩 실험집단과 통제집단을 구성한 후, 실험집단을 대상으로 음악 게임을 활용한 치료를 10회기에 걸쳐 시행하였다. 실험집단과 통제집단에게 사전-사후에 인지기능, 우울감, 자아존중감 수준을 측정하였고, 실험집단에게 10회기 동안의 게임실험 과정을 기록하고 사후 몰입도를 측정하였다. 연구 결과 게임이 제공하는 청각, 시각, 촉각 등의 감각자극과 상호소통적 활동이 노인의 우울감과 자존감 상승에 기능하였을 뿐만 아니라 손기능 향상에도 긍정적 영향을 미친 것을 알 수 있었다.
