An Analysis of Family Function and Burden of Family Caregivers of the Patient with Brain Injury

Abstract

The purpose of this descriptive research were to investigate the relationship between family function and burden of family caregivers of the patient with brain injury, and to offer basic data to find alternatives of reducing their burden. Subjects, 106 family caregivers of the patient with brain injury, were selected through convenience sampling method from the 2 hospitals in Kwangju. Data were collected through the structured questionnaires that include general characteristics, family function scale, and burden scale. They were analyzed by Cronbach'alpha, descriptive statistics, ANOVA, t-test and Pearson Correlation Coefficient by using $SPSS/PC^+$ program. The mean score for family function was 60.98 and burden was 72.76. Burden with caregivers' general characteristics was related to age, marital status, support after admission, caring years, caring hours per day and alternation. Burden with patients' general characteristics was related to sex, religion, education, hospitalization experience, operation experience, present condition and prognosis.

본 연구는 뇌손상 환자를 돌보는 가족원의 특성에 따른 가족기능과 부담감을 파악하여, 뇌손상 환자를 돌보는 가족원들의 효과적인 대처, 적응 전략을 도모할 수 있는 간호중재 개발의 기초자료를 제공하기 위해 수행된 서술적 조사 연구이다. 자료수집기간은 2010년 6월 17일부터 28일까지 실시하였고, 연구대상은 K시의 C대학병원과 C병원 신경외과 병동에 입원하고 있는 뇌손상 환자 가족보호자 106명이었다. 연구도구는 Sung MS(1989)이 보완한 가족기능 측정도구와 Suh MH et al.(1993)이 개발한 부담감 측정도구를 사용하였다. 자료분석은 SPSS/WIN 12.0 통계 프로그램을 이용하여 기술통계, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, t-test, ANOVA로 분석하였다. 연구결과, 뇌손상 환자를 돌보는 가족원의 일반적 특성에 따른 부담감은 연령, 결혼여부, 입원 전 가족에 대한 부양책임, 입원 후 가족에 대한 부양책임, 환자를 돌본 기간, 병원에서 보내는 하루 평균 시간, 교대여부에 따라 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났고, 뇌손상 환자의 일반적 특성에 따른 부담감은 성별, 종교, 학력, 입원경험, 수술여부, 환자의 현상태, 예상되는 퇴원시 환자의 상태에서 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다.
