Abstract

This study was performed to identify the thinning effect on stand vegetation structure and stand characteristics of the oak stands, located in Bongjeon-ri, Seoha-myeon, Hamyang-gun. Stand data were collected at 15 plots in 12 thinned stands and 3 unthinned stands, and tree ring growth of core samples (5 trees per each plot) was measured to analyze the growth difference between thinned and unthinned stands. Dominant trees of the tree layer of the thinned stands were Quercus mongolica, Quercus serrata and Quercus variabilis; the sub-tree layer were Styrax obassia, Cornus controversa, Alnus hirsuta, and Quercus mongolica; Sasa borealis was predominant in the shrub layer. DBH, crown length, and crown width were larger in thinned stands than in unthinned stands, but tree height was higher in unthinned stands than in thinned stands. Average ring growth of the thinned and unthinned stands was 1.82 mm/year, 1.38 mm/year, respectively. Therefore, thinning improved the growth of DBH, crown width, and crown length in oak stands.
