Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify depression after a stroke and related factors for hospitalized patients with a stroke. Methods: The participants were 116 patients with a stroke admitted to university medical centers in C and B cities. The study was done from December 16, 2011 to March 15, 2012. Results: The level of physical fatigue had a moderate correlation with the level of depression(r=.60, p<.001), while there was a strong positive correlation between level of mental fatigue and depression(r=.74, p<.001). The correlation between the degree of sensory nerve fatigue and the level of depression was moderate(r=.58, p<.001). Depression in the participants was highest for mental fatigue which explained 54% had depression. Next, the degree of mental fatigue, economic status and presence of an occupation and depression were found to explain 61% of the total. Conclusion: The results indicate that in doing nursing assessments and interventions for depression in stroke patients, it is necessary for nurses to develop nursing program and applications in which the level of mental fatigue, economic status and presence of an occupation is considered.
