Evaluation on Economic Value of the Greenbelt's Ecosystem Services in the Seoul Metropolitan Region

Abstract

This study identified the value of the benefits provided by the Greenbelt's forest and cropland to over twenty four million inhabitants in the Seoul metropolitan area. The Greenbelt has sustainably provided ecological soundness and various benefits from its ecosystem, whereas few assessment of its value has been made. The purpose of this study is to realize the value of natural assets and provide basic data to reflect its value for policy decisions of the capital region through the assessment of natural resources and the valuation of ecosystem services in the Greenbelt. Therefore, we, first, classified the ecosystem services by analysing the area based on the approach of the Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity(TEEB). Then it provided an assessment of the land cover types and quantified the non-market values of provisioning services, regulating services and cultural services provided by the Greenbelt's ecosystems. Finally, this paper suggested the appropriate measures, which are helpful for conservation and management of the Greenbelt, according to the TEEB's approach. The total economic values of ecosystem services of the Greenbelt are KSW 2,463 billion Won.
