Abstract

A new gerbera cultivar 'Scarlet Diva' was released by the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science (NIHHS) in 2010. A cross was made between 'Basic' with pink flower color and 'Mephisto' with purple flower color in 2007. After investigation of the characteristics for four years (from 2007 to 2010), it was selected specially for cut flower. The 'Scarlet Diva' has a scarlet pink flower color (RHS R52A) with dark brown disc center and semi-double flower. The average flower diameter is 11.8cm, large-sized flower. And inner ray floret and disc diameter are 5.5cm and 2.6cm, respectively. It is a vigorous cultivar and also adaptable to the local cultural environment of Korea. It is expected that if the 'Scarlet Diva' will be planted, savings on the royalty fees paid to other countries can be realized. And the local growers will also be benefitted since the cost of this cultivar will be lower than the imported ones.
