Abstract

The Life table that is quantifying human lifespan is important official statistic to develop effective policy for healthcare and welfare. Since the policy direction about business environment has strong influence on national competitiveness, making quantifying tools for business environment will be helpful to develop effective policies for that. In this study, we developed business life table using approximately 1,000,000 observations about business establishment and closure. We could not use same method applied to human life table to make the business life table, because, unlike humans, the possibility of business closure is decreased when the survival period of the business is increased. Therefore, we proposed indexes like 'business stationary lifespan' and 'survival rate during 40 years', and compiled the business life table using the indexes. The business life table was compiled yearly from 2004 to 2011. And from the tables, we found that the 'business stationary lifespan' similar to 'human average life expectancy' decreased continuously. In point of business lifespan, we evaluate that the business life table developed from this study reflected properly business environment and actualities facing business. And we expected that the business life table will do important role to develop policy for improving business environment.
