  • Published : 2013.02.28

Abstract

Purpose : This study was done to identify factors influencing compassion fatigue in emergency department nurses. Methods : The respondents were 142 emergency department nurses. Date was collected from July 27 to September 20, 2011 at nine regional emergency medical centers. Data were analyzed using the SPSS Win 18.0 program and included descriptive statistics, ANOVA, Scheffe, Pearson correlation and multiple regression. Results : Compassion fatigue of nurses in emergency department was positively correlated with traumatic events, personality type, state anxiety, and stress coping strategy. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that 27% of the variance for compassion fatigue was significantly accounted for by personality type and traumatic events. Conclusion : These results suggest that we should consider the personality type of work assignment for nurses and develop the coping and counseling program with traumatic event for nurses in order to decrease compassion fatigue.
