Abstract

Social network analysis was considered as the relatively new approach in social science. The purpose of this study was to use the social network analysis to verify the relationship of students' interaction with the self-directed learning and learner satisfaction in problem-based learning (PBL) class. Five classes 128 sophomore nursing students were included in the study. Friendship and information share network centralization, density and in-degree centrality were used as indicators for measuring students' interaction. The results indicated that classes which had both higher centralization and density information share network showed higher score of self-directed learning. The classes which had both higher centralization and density friendship network showed higher score of learner satisfaction. Moreover, the more students share the information the higher score of self-directed learning, and the better friendship resulted in higher learner satisfaction. Also, the higher self-directed learning brought higher learner satisfaction and the class participation. Based on the results, social network analysis can be used as a new approach for providing tutors visualization guide.
