Abstract

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to explore the perception and coping types of initial clinical practice of junior nursing students using the Q methodology. Method : Q-methodology is a scientific method for identifying individual subjectivity. 38 Q-statements on a scale of 1-9 were deducted after intensive interview with thirty five participants in two universities in D city and reviewing related literatures. The collected data were analyzed using PC-QUNAL software. Results : Three different types were identified from the examination. The types were labeled as 'positive-active participators', 'burdened-overcareful endeavorers' and 'abandoned-relation dependents'. Positive-active participators look on the bright side of initial clinical practice and they are self-motivated and are to be active students. Burdened-overcareful endeavorers are overwhelmed by overloaded practice or homework. They do their best but act very carefully in terms of clinical setting. Abandoned-relation dependents think their clinical experience depends on the nurses who work at their practice sites. They are dependent to faculties or friends. Conclusion : The result of this study could make nursing educators to understand their students' initial clinical practice experiences and would provide the basis for developing clinical educational programs according to the nursing students' perception and coping types.
