Abstract

Organic aerosol (OA) is one of the major constituents of particulate matter (PM) in the atmosphere, thus, understanding the chemical properties of OA is essential in order to evaluate the impact of PM to human health and climate change. OA is comprised of various individual compounds, and the traditional approach for the analysis of each organic compound in the aerosol is the GC-MS analysis method by organic solvent extraction (SE method). In the SE method, solvent extraction and evaporation steps are labor intensive and time consuming. In addition, the use of large quantities of PM samples produces the low time-resolution results. The objective of this study is to establish an efficient organic compound extraction technique using the thermal desorption technique (TD method). In the proposed internal TD technique, the injection port of GC-MS was utilized as a TD system and we call this as internal TD. Performance of the internal TD-GC-MS is evaluated for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in standards and various ambient $PM_{10}$ samples, and we present the results of replicate analysis for 17 PAHs to confirm accuracy and precision of this technique.
