Abstract

This study sought to examine how preschool children's smartphone dependency is affected by their own mothers' smartphone dependency, parenting self-efficacy, and parenting behaviors. The major findings of this study are as follows. Children's smartphone dependency was positively correlated with their mothers' own smartphone dependency and negatively correlated with their mothers' parenting self-efficacy. In addition, children's smartphone dependency was negatively correlated with their mothers' warmth encouragement and limit setting while it was positively correlated with overprotection permissiveness. It was also found that when the mothers' smartphone dependency, which was the strongest predictor of their children's own smartphone dependency, was contolled, the mothers' parenting self-efficacy of communication, overprotection permissiveness, and limit setting were significant predictors of children's smartphone dependency. The results of this study imply the importance of parenting in preventing children from developing smartphone dependency.
