Abstract

This research was conducted to examine the factors affecting the desire for independence by single parents. For this purpose, 117 people residing in family welfare institution for single parents in Seoul were selected as research subjects to analyze the factors affecting the desire for independence by categorizing associated factors into social support (psychological support, material support) and self-esteem. As a result of analysis, psychological support had a positive (+) impact on the desire for independence. In addition, self-esteem served as a mediator and also had a direct impact on the desire for independence. On the contrary, material support had no impact on any factors concerning self-esteem and desire for independence. In conclusion, it was verified that psychological emotional support is relatively more important than material support among the factors affecting the desire for independence by single parents. Based on these results, the practical implications suggest that reinforcement of social support is critical to increase the desire for independence by single parents.
