Current Development Status on the Genetically Modified Crops in Korea

국내 유전자 변형 작물의 개발 현황

Abstract

In order to estimate the present status on the development of genetically modified (GM) crops in the Republic of Korea, we screened the research articles related to the GM crops from domestic scientific journals. In addition, we also included annual or final research reports of individual research projects funded through national projects including Rural Development Administration (RDA) projects, Agricultural Research Promotion Center (ARPC) projects, Biogreen21 project by RDA, and Crop Functional Genomics project by Ministry of Science & Technology. A total of 177 varieties of 51 crop species were summarized to be subjected to genetically modified. Among those transgenic crops, rice, tobacco and potato were most widely utilized crops focusing on the development of abiotic and biotic stress resistant traits. Most cases are in the laboratory or green house stage and only 13 cases were reported in the field testing stages in national research institute such as RDA.

국내에서 개발되고 있는 유전자변형작물의 현황을 파악하고자 국내학회지 6종의 논문과 국책연구사업으로 추진되고 있는 과제들의 연차 및 최종보고서에서 유전자변형작물 개발에 관한 내용을 발췌 조사하였다. 논문 및 결과보고서의 내용을 정리해 전체 51작목 177종의 유전자변형 작물 개발에 대한 정보가 얻어졌다. 작물대상별로는 주곡인 벼가 가장 많았으며, 담배, 감자 등 다양한 작물에서 연구가 수행되고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 특성별 연구는 환경스트레스 저항성 및 병 저항성 유전자변형작물 개발이 활발한 것으로 조사됐다. 본 조사에서 파악된 포장단계의 유전자변형작물 개발사례는 13건으로 주로 국가연구기관을 중심으로 포장실험이 이루어지는 것으로 확인되었다.
