Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the dietary behaviors, health behaviors and depression among middle and high school students in Korea and to examine impact of dietary behaviors and health behaviors on depression by school level (middle school vs high school). The data were derived from the 9th Korea youth risk behavior web-based survey 2013 in Korea and analyzed using the IBM SPSS statistics version 21.0 software package, using complex samples analysis. The subjects were 72,435 Korean adolescents (middle school students: 36,530, 48.8%, high school students: 35,905, 51.2%). Prevalence of depression was middle school students: 17.6% and high school students: 15.6% in this study. There were significant differences in skipping breakfast, fruit intake, vegetable intake, milk intake, fast food intake, ramen intake, current smoking, current alcohol experience, and vigorous physical activity between middle school students and high schools student in Korea. Using a multiple logistic regression, predictive factors of depression for middle school students included skipping breakfast, milk intake, carbonated beverages intake, fast food intake, ramen intake, snack intake, current smoking, current alcohol experience and predictive factors of depression for high school students skipping breakfast, milk intake, fast food intake, current smoking, current alcohol experience, and vigorous physical activity. This results indicate that the health behavior empowerment program should be developed to improve physical and mental health through adolescent dietary behavior.
