Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the level of smartphone overuse, depression, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationship in college of health science students and to understand the relationships among those variables. From October 1st, 2013 to December 10th, 2013, data was collected through convenience sampling of 260 students at 4-year institution based on Gyeonggi province and Chungbuk province. To obtain objective conclusions from the resulting data, we performed statistical analysis of t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe' test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis through the statistical package, SPSS WIN 18.0. Variables that affect smartphone overuse, include interpersonal relationship and satisfaction of campus life. The total explanation of smartphone overuse was 13.3%. Smartphone overuse is significantly negatively related with the individual's interpersonal relationship, which is negatively related to depression. Self-esteem is positively correlated with interpersonal relationship. From these findings, it seems very important that the educational ways to improve the interpersonal relationship and satisfaction of campus are to be sought after. Furthermore, other variables related to smartphone overuse, will need to be considered for the next following research.
