Abstract

This study aims to explore the characteristics of big social disasters mentioned in social media in terms of issue survival cycle. During last 10 years, the most biggest 10 disaster cases were selected and tweets related to these disasters were automatically collected. Based on analysis of tweets, the survival period of disaster issues were calculated. And then, through the establishment and verification of hypotheses, the factors influencing the survival period were derived and the influence of the factors was analyzed. As a result, the survival period of the disaster issue varied widely with disaster characteristics, the frequency of tweets, news reports, and user interest. Especially, it was found that the most powerful factor in determining the survival period was damage scale of victims. Compared with preceeding studies, this study is meaningful because it is based on the analysis not of news reports but of social media which show what real public opinion about social issues is. The derived factors and influences may subsequently be utilized as a basis for quality research and gathering public opinion in establishing disaster policies.
