Abstract

This study examined the potentials of foam concrete aggregates coated with titanium dioxide (TiO2) for removing atmosphere precursors including nitrogen oxides(NOX) and sulfur oxides(SOX). The foam concrete aggregates that were obtained from crushing of hardened foam concrete by dry rotary cutter were sorted into 6~9 mm and 6~13 mm in size and then coated by sparing the solvent produced from the blending of isopropyl alcohol(IPA) and TiO2 powder. The removal capacities of the TiO2-coated foam concrete aggregates for NOX and SOX were measured by using reactor for the NOX degradation with a chamber of 840 × 720 × 250 mm in size that was designed in accordance with ISO 22197-1 specification. The total porosity of the foam concrete aggregates was little influenced by the TiO2 coating, resulting in the ranges of 41.3% and 45.4%. The removal rates of NOX and SOX measured in the TiO2-coated foam concrete aggregates were 67.6% and 54.0%, respectively, indicating 2.7 times higher removal capacities than the conventional surface TiO2 coating approaches.
