Evaluation of caries preventive effect after a 6-year community water fluoridation program in Gimhae, Korea

Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate the caries reductive effect on permanent teeth by oral health programs composed of community water fluoridation program and pit and fissure program in Gimhae, Korea. Methods: Dental surveys were carried out on 6- to 14-year old children in 1998 before the implementation of water fluoridation and pit and fissure sealant program in Gimhae, Korea. In 2005, dental surveys were carried out on same age group to evaluate the caries reductive effects from the oral health programs. The number of the subjects was 7,485 children in 1998 and 2,613 children in 2005. The obtained data from the survey were analyzed with the SPSS statistical package. The caries reductive effect was estimated by the difference of DMFT indices by age group between before and after oral health programs. Results: The reduction of DMF rate of 10-year and 12-year olds was evaluated as 25.2% and 25.5%, respectively. The caries reduction rate of 10-year and 12-year olds from the oral health program was estimated as 61.8% and 53.9%, respectively by the difference of DMFT index between before and after oral health programs. Conclusions: These results suggests that the caries reductive effect on permanent teeth by oral health programs in Gimhae is high like other studies.
