The impact of DMFT index on oral health related quality of Life in community-dwelling elderly

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship of dental caries status and oral health related quality of life among elderly population in some rural area, Korea. Methods: 1,181 participants (male 496, female 686) aged more than 65 years (mean 70.5±4.4 years) were surveyed cross-sectionally. All the subjects were examined their oral status by two trained dentists and surveyed with short-form of Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) by face to face interview. Categorical responses of strata-adjusted Wilcoxon correlation and Kruskal-Willis test and multiple regression analysis after adjusting for socio-demographic variables were adapted for statistical analysis. Results: There were significant differences in mean score of OHIP-14 at male group, aged 65-69 group, higher education group and have a occupation group than counterpart group. The mean score of OHIP-14 were higher in 0-10 DMFT index group, 0 DT index group, and with <5 MT index group than each counterpart group. On the other hand the higher FT index, the higher score of OHIP-14. Conclusion: The findings of the present study indicate that MT and DT index significantly afect on the Oral Health Impact Profile of the elderly in rural area. It is recommended that a long-range political program should be developed to reduce MT and DT index for the elderly.
