Relationship between oral-health related quality of life of kindergarten teachers and attempts to improve oral health

Abstract

Objectives. This research was implemented to improve kindergarten teachers oral health and quality of life (QOL). Methods. A survey targeted 219 kindergartens teachers from June to August in 2009. Survey contents were general attributes, oral health awareness, attempts to improve oral health, and an oral health impact profile index short (OHIP-14). The oral health promotion behavior measured using the Likert scale, 'most frequently' as 4, 'frequently' as 3, 'a few' as 2, 'rarely' as 1, 'never' as 0. The total score of the oral health-related QOL ranged from 0 to 56 points. The higher score means that the person has lower oral health-related QOL. Responses were, statistically analysed using SPSS version 15.0 for Windows. Also, independent t test and one-way ANOVA were conducted to reveal between-group differences concerning attempts to improve oral health and oral healthrelated of 'actions for improving oral health' and 'oral heath-related QOL. Phased multiple regression analysis was conducted to reveal the factors affect in oral heath-related QOL. Post-hoc comparisons were done using the Duncan multiple range test. Results. Almost one-quarter (23.7%) of respondents considered their oral cavity to be healthy. Most respondents (94.1%) were concerned with their oral health, indicating a high rate of oral health awareness. Overall, attempts to improve oral health averaged 2.95 points on the 5.0 points scale and overall oral health-related QOL was 9.41 points. Attempts to improve oral health were frequent in private kindergarten teachers (3.20 points) and teachers who were aware that their oral cavity was healthy (3.25 points). Reduced oral health QOL was associated with reduced concern for oral health and increased prevalence of oral disease. The most important factor affecting oral health-related QOL was proper tooth brushing. Other important factors were abstaining from alcohol and proper nutrition. Conclusions. Oral health education information such as proper tooth brushing and increased attention to oral health are important in increasing oral health-related QOL of kindergarten teachers in Korea.
