Self-esteem, Communication Competence, and Job Satisfaction of Public Health Officials in Local Government

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate the structural relationship among self-esteem, communication competence, and job satisfaction of public health officials in local government. The subjects were 153 public health officials in local government. On a scale of 1 to 4, the mean self-esteem was 3.15. On a scale of 1 to 5, the mean communication competence was 3.38 and the mean job satisfaction was 3.12. There was no significant difference in self-esteem by any general characteristics. There was significant difference in communication competence by position (F=3.486, p=.033). There were significant differences in job satisfaction by current employment duration (F=4.198, p=.017) and position (F=5.440, p=.005). There were significant positive correlations among self-esteem and communication competence (r=.378, p<.001), self-esteem and job satisfaction (r=.252, p=.002), and communication competence and job satisfaction (r=.347, p<.001). Self-esteem affected on communication competence positively significant (${\beta}=.378$, p<.001), and job satisfaction was positively significant with communication competence (${\beta}=.347$, p<.001). Self-esteem showed a indirect effect on job satisfaction (${\beta}=.131$, p=007). In conclusion, to improve job satisfaction of public health officials in local government, it is necessary to introduce and operate the systematic program focused on self-esteem and communication competence.

본 연구는 지방자치단체 보건직 공무원의 자존감, 의사소통능력, 직무만족 간의 관계를 파악하고자 시행되었다. 연구대상은 지방자치단체 보건직 공무원 153명이었다. 주요변수의 관계를 파악하기 위해 AMOS 20.0을 이용하여 경로분석을 실시하였다. 연구대상자의 자존감은 4점 만점에 3.15점, 의사소통능력과 직무만족은 모두 5점 만점에 각각 3.38점과 3.12점이었다. 자존감에 대해 유의한 차이를 보이는 일반적 특성은 없었고, 의사소통능력은 직급에 따라 차이가 있었다(F=3.486, p=.033). 직무만족은 보건소근무경력(F=4.198, p=.017)과 직급(F=5.440, p=.005)에 따라 차이가 있었다. 자존감과 의사소통능력(r=0.378, p<.001), 자존감과 직무만족(r=0.252, p=.002), 의사소통능력과 직무만족(r=0.347, p<.001)은 모두 정의 상관관계가 있었다. 자존감이 의사소통능력에 미치는 영향(${\beta}=.378$, p<.001)과 의사소통능력이 직무만족에 미치는 영향(${\beta}=.347$, p<.001)은 모두 유의미한 양(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 자존감은 의사소통을 매개로 하여 간접효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다(${\beta}=.131$, p=007). 본 연구결과를 토대로 지방자치단체 보건직 공무원의 직무만족을 향상시키기 위하여 자존감과 의사소통능력을 향상시킬 수 있는 체계적인 프로그램을 도입하여 운영할 것을 제언한다.
